Model Trains

Model Trains—Build from Scratch or Buy Ready to Run?

Model trains were originally built by the hobbyists from scratch.  Tires and other machined parts would be ordered or purchased.  Completing the details was a part of the hobby.

Today, modern manufacturing techniques are able to produce models that are quite realistic.  The details can be done by machine using techniques such as cardboard engineering or low temperature castings.

Ready-to-run models are available in all of the different scales.  As the name suggests, they are ready for use right out of the box.  Other than putting together the track and adding a few details, there is no assembly required.

Ready-to-run models are a good choice for kids and people of all skill levels.  Some hobbyists enjoy assembling the models more than running the train.  They might choose craftsman kits or purchase individual items to add more details and increase the realism of a ready-made piece.

Although scratch-building is not as popular as it once was, there are still some hobbyists who want to do the work.  A few manufacturers sell individual supplies for scratch-building.

A more popular alternative is referred to as kit-bashing.  In kit-bashing, hobbyists buy several different kits and combine the parts to create a new, unique piece.  Sometimes, the desire is to create model trains that are exact replicas of existing ones when no complete kit is available.

Landscaping or scenery building is an enjoyable part of the hobby.  Buildings and other accessories can be purchased to create a fantasy land for the train to run through.

Some hobbyists buy ready-to-run models, but do the scenery construction from scratch.  Often the desire is to recreate a place from the past or present.

Materials used in scenery construction include natural materials like sawdust, moss and lichen for ground cover.  Commercially prepared grasses and miniature trees are also available.

Scenery and other accessories for model trains are constructed using the same scale used by the manufacturer.  It may only be “close” to scale.  Most commercial products have an acceptable scale range for production.  For example, the H0/00 scale for accessories ranges from 1:87 to 1:64.

If you are looking for a gift or hoping to expand your own collection, the place to go on the internet is eBay.  There are hundreds of thousands of locomotives, boxcars and accessories being auctioned off right now.  In some cases, they sell for pennies.
